Preparing Next Generation Engineering Graduates
The great divide between engineering education and engineering employment
Engineering has been one of the most sought after careers from time immemorial. According to the HRD ministry, India has 6,214 engineering institutes with around 2.9 million students and close to 1.5 million engineers enter the job market every year.
A detailed study about 150,000 engineering student graduates in 2013 revealed that about 97% engineering graduates look for core and software engineering employment. However, a mere 3% only possess suitable skills to be employed, with only 7% equipped with the ability to handle core engineering tasks.
The engineering sector has a high demand for skilled engineers. The higher education system increased the number of enrolments to meet the industry’s demand. While umpteen colleges, universities and courses are increasing every year, the quality of education has remained stagnant. It is ironic that the field of engineering which is centered on innovation and solutions, has little innovative solutions applied in its education methodology.
